Reflections on Amsterdam by Pam Fuhrmann

The theme of enhancing awareness and expanding doors of perception found home with me in Amsterdam. And while I could write to many themes and experiences, it is the question of how does our degree of familiarity effect our level of perception that most intrigues me.

Is familiarity a hindrance to experiencing a more expansive awareness or a tool to be utilized – a lever or key to opening these very doors. What does our state of mind regarding our surroundings filter what is available for our senses to perceive and the way in which we evaluate the information we sense? For me, Amsterdam posed the ideal location to ponder this very question, for it contains both a level of familiarity and the continual possibility of the new experience. Yet how would I frame my level of awareness in a town I have lived for 20 years or in an unfamiliar or foreign location.

These are questions for both reflection and experimentation. And ultimately, another lens to my practice of engagement; for truly what I perceive and the way in which I process these observations impact the way in which I engage with the others and the world.

Writing to you from Sao Paulo,

Pam
