REFLECTIONS ON MAUI, HAWAII SPRING RETREAT 2016 BY JEFF VANDER CLUTE

Leadership is the disciplined practice of JOY.

To speak with adequate reverence of deep currents of molten rock and volcanic spirit, of power and love, and of an absolute and yet utterly dynamic grounding of connection to both Mother Earth and the Universe… still seems impossible, even after nearly two months of integration.

So instead I offer you the English translation of “Pūnohunohu i ka lani” on page 12 of Lele Kawa: Fire Rituals of Pele:

When the smoke of the volcano rises to heaven

Tranquility is found at the bottom of Kīlauea volcano

To witness this from the cliff of the sacred woman

is to shudder in its serenity

What then is the need for voice?

And Taupōuri Tangarō’s commentary:

When the omens in the sky reflecting the conditions below are well understood, the reality is one of sensory awareness, where voicing the obvious only threatens the connection.
